Born, in Hamilton County Chattanooga, TN on December 16, 1930 to Lena Rivers Moore Hendricks and James Gaither Hendricks (both deceased). Charlie joined the Navy in 1948 with his love of helping people he became a hospital Corpsman. He served in the Vietnam War, Korean War, Cuban Missile Crisis, the Bay of Pigs and Panama Canal conflict. He was at home on all vessels he was stationed on and he served as the ships and subs Corpsman on all of them. He received a special Presidential Commendation from President Richard M. Nixon for moratoria service for helping another ships shipmate at sea giving medical treatment via short wave radio. Doc retired from the Navy in 1972 as Chief with a heavy heart. He loved the navy. He would have stayed forever but circumstances wouldn't allow it. After retiring from the Navy he worked at the Charleston County Jail as their PA for 13 years. Charles belonged to many community service organizations. He was a 32nd degree Master Mason and member of the St. Andrews Lodge #367. He was a member of Omar Shriners and a member of the Elks Lodge #242. Charlie loved the outdoors golfing, fishing and watching birds. Doc loved to play cards or go to a casino with family and friends. He got rejuvenated by the lights and sounds of the machines. But Charles first and foremost favorite place to be or thing to do was be with his family. Charles was a devout family man there wasn't much else he would tell you he needed but love and to be with his family. He is survived by his wife of 57 years Patricia Jo Hartman Hendricks, 2 daughters Kimberly Allen Hendricks Glick and Jill Rivers Hendricks Ahearn (Jerry) both of Charleston, SC, 5 grandchildren Thomas Charles Glick, Timothy Joseph Glick (Heather) Michael Allen Glick, Patricia "Tricia" Jeanette Ahearn all of Charleston, SC and Kati Jean Ahearn of Asheville, NC, 2 great-grandchildren Joseph Hayden Glick and Andrew Hudson Glick of Charleston, SC, 1 brother Joseph Wayne Hendricks of Rossville, Ga. and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents Lena and Jim Hendricks 2 sisters Barbara Jean Dodds and Virginia Doris Rapier, 4 brothers James Franklin "Sonny", George Garland "Buddy", Robert Eugene "Genie" and Billy Edwin "Bill" or "Sweet William." Memorial service will be held Saturday, March 5, 2016 at 3:00 pm at the Riverfront Park on the old Naval Base. Drive in on McMillan Ave. turn left and follow the signs.
