Time on the Pond on MADISON

Post by Clark Jordan »

I'm kind of curious on who may claim the fame for having the most time on MADISON while underway.

I personally had 6 patrols and an interfleet tranfer on MADISON. Can anyone top that? I bet that Chief Gomez has more.

How about this:
Sea trials after Poseidon conversion out of EB in Groton, Conn. I remember surfacing in the middle of a Russian fishing fleet off the Grand Bank!
Test of missile launch system with 4 sabot ripple shot, very impressive!
Poseidon missile launch at Cape Kennedy(Canaveral)
Shakedown cruise and weapons and sound calibration trials in Puerto Rico and St. Croix, TOTO tongue of the ocean
ORSE board, don't remember where that was.
6 patrols out of Holy Loch, longest patrol, I believe was 67 days

Very fond memories!

6 patrols was not an uncommonly high number. I also did 6 but I remember quite a few that were aboard before me and still there after I left. Some of those include: Kelly Ray, Victor Madison, Bob Clements, Charlie Plotz, Mr. Fisk, Jim Whitmire, and Gary Rhoades. Most of the ones that their first patrol was the same as my first patrol were still crewmembers when I left the Navy.

I didn't mean to suggest that6 patrols was more than many had. I know of several who have more. Maybe that is the best way to count...who had the most patrols on MADISON? Surely someone had more than 7.

Another question is what was the longest patrol? I had a few that seemed to last 1000 days, but were probably more around 70.

Chip, I found this photo in a pile of dust. Looks like I might be able to make a seal with an OBA or ALB Mask, you think? Surprisingly, I remeber all of the names you listed.

Vic, please upload that photo to the Pictures albums as well. It would make a good "then" picture for an avatar as well (if you shrink it down). (see this)

Gee Thanks Yoeman Hanson

Post by BobbyC »

I did 10 on the Jolly Dolly thanks to Yoeman Hanson who did one patrol, called to the XOs attention on my supposingly last patrol (my 6th one) that my sea time was mis-calculated, that previous tender duty overseas in Scotland should be counted as "neutral" duty. I got 4-more patrols and he was back on shore duty. Wonder what he is doing these days?

Why do I suspect it's not trying to find you to make sure all is well? ;-)

Good photo there Vic. I didn't see even a trace of a white or gray hair in that young dude's whiskers.

No records here. I made 4 runs on the Jolly Dolly and 2 on the Gomer B.

The Jolly Dolly patrols included the ERP in Holy Loche (my second ERP ... lucky me LOL), and the one that brought the old lady back to U.S. waters. I also rode her up from Charleston to Newport News for her overhaul. I spend my last year in the Navy at Newport News.

Too Long

Post by TroyQuillin »

88 days underwater underway, patrol from hell, lots of bad juju those days. I can't remember if it was patrol 79 or 81 somewhere in there. Tried to block that one out, I bet we would all agree on that one, too much Skippy.
