Identifying Shipmates

Part of finding and gathering that info is first determing who all we are looking for. There are roughly 650 names on the Shipmates lists now.

Rough calculations tell me there were possibly 3000 sailors who served onboard the Jolly Dolly during that lifespan. We need to identify the remaining 2300!

So work on thinking of some of the names, even if you don't know for sure where they are or where they came from.

Who was your LPO? Who was your Div Off? If you were in 3 section rotation, you relieved someone on watch and someone relieved you. Who were those people? That means at least 4 names you know besides yours. Are those folks listed on the Shipmates List? If not, add them to the "Whatever Happened to...?" forum.

I have a couple of sailing lists from the 60's. I believe I sent them in to be archived. If they need to be reposted let me know.

1st Class Cook, Commissioning and Blue 1 through 6.

Retired as an E-7, Sam passed away at the age of 67 in 2004. I helped lay his ashes to rest at Arlington National Cemetary.

Good cook, great baker, loyal friend, fine shipmate, and honorable American who was once a POW. May he rest in peace in the safe harbor of God's eternal reward. Mike Steiner

Keith,

Here are a couple names for the whatever happened to or Shipmates listing. You probably remember the first.

RMCM(SS) Salvatore "Sam" Sangiorgio. He was the COB when I reported aboard Oct '80 and went with the Blue crew at crew split in '82. I ran into him again about '86-'88 when he was Squadron CMC in La Madd. I know he went to New Construction on Newport News for a while but then retired from SUBLANT Staff.

IC1(SS)/CDR Alan P. Danaher. I knew him at Sima Charleston in '76 but he was on Madison approx '74. He made LDO probably '79-'80 and I ran into him again when he was Chief Engineer on Orion in La Madd.

Keep up the good work.

I can still remember a few of the Gold Crew Commissioning crew that I have not seen on here yet... Charlie "Swamp Fox" Marshall, Bobby Gale Glaze, Mick Frarie, Don Evans, Donald Smith, Ed Bruggensworth, Joe Stokes, MT1 Brown (bluie) all MT's... Jim Walters, Gary Host, FT1 Krachanus, "Duck" Sharpe... all FT's... Ray Pease, Bill Rushe, Charlie Walter, Donald Beesley, Pete Jansenius all TM's I believe all of these men are Plank Owners. Lt. Peter Suska, Lt George Ranes, Lt. Leroy Collins all were Weaps Officers. Lt. Kelly came on later. There are few officers I respected more than Lt Collins and few I liked better than Lt. Suska.

Thom Cantrall MT1 (SS) Gold '63-'68
