What you didn't know

As you may know the EMs brought shore power through the aft hatch each time we tied up to the tender, but when we went into NN shipyards for overhaul it was routed through the aft escape hatch, the side hatch. So when it was time to connect we tried to open the hatch and it would not budge. The dogs were all free and clear and still it would not open. We went topside and found a wood wedge preventing its opening. It was nicely painted over so you wouldn't see it. Needless to say I was pissed and made sure when we got out of the yards 3 years later ('82), it was free of wedges.
