I wrote this poem in the first person, but it is based on sympathetic observations. No one is immune to temptations; It is particularly a problem for a sailor on the beach. I know.
I believe it was Ben Franklin that said something like this," Experience keeps a dear school, but a fool learns in no other."
The Heartache Stone
I don’t blame you for leaving me;
I didn’t even ask you to stay.
I should have pretended I didn’t see
Or turned my head the other way,
But I just lost my mind
When opportunity walked by that day.
Northern sea patrols are a cold and lonely time.
Months pass before our feet touch dry land.
Her touch had the warmth of sunshine,
When she walked over and took my hand.
Too late I realized the mistake I made;
Temptation was leading me on.
But walls of experience are with heartaches laid,
Not blocks of stone.
Sooner or later one will find
That each must build his own.
