Holy Moley! (comment)

Many exercised their creative talents during downtime on patrol by writing poetry or prose. Here's a spot to share yours.

I was running through the links page and updating (or deleting) dead links. Sadly quite a few fell into the dead links and I couldn't find an updated link. Since there isn't a forwarding address, you can't tell if they've gone away because it the site owner lost interest or no longer had the resources to support it.

One of the dead ones was a site dedicated to sub sailors' postings of their poetry and prose. As mentioned above, I'm a little surprised at the response we got here. Is that the sort of thing that might be worth opening up (or setting as a separate site?) for sailors to share?

Your input appreciated.

lf not two much trouble. I say yes. I will check it to see if I can locate some old friends from the training schools (2 years worth) who wrote poetry. I will also tell them about our web site if this is O K .

Thanks for the feedback.

Let me give it some more thought and see if anyone else weighs in before we take off.

Keith,

Do you have a program that tracks (by day) each topic "read" activity? It appears that we are getting a fair number of daily looks at the poetry topic. If you don't, I think to satisfy my curiosity, I will start recording the activity manually (each day that I visit the forum) and compare it with a couple of the other popular topics. I simply can't remember the number of visits from time to time, but my gut feeling is that it is gaining popularity.

Also, I was telling a couple of my friends about placing poems on the website and they urged me to copyright some of my better poetry. I have started that process. I have already submitted copyright requests for the poems posted so far on the 627 website. It is really an easy process once you wade through the requirements. I will post more poems on the 627 website as soon as I get copyright requests submitted. I should get this done by Friday.

Do you think many of the wives visit the discussion forums? I have written a lot of poems to my girlfriend/wife that deal with leaving/missing her. They are not real personal (also clean & not controversial) She has OK'd a few to possibly post. Do you feel that there would be an interest there. A few of the guys would be interested, but probably not enough interest from most of the guys to go to the trouble.
I'm sure the wives look at the pics with the guys. It would be nice to have a forum that they could develop an interest in reading. My wife is President of a local music club and I was asked to read my poems several times at their meetings. They LOVED to hear the personal/emotional side of men cruising the ocean depths in a "big black tomb" (to borrow a term from KJ Ray's poem). Please give me your feelings on this.

Again, I appreciate what you do.

Webserver company has statistics by page. I rarely use them but will take a look at what is installed and how to make it available.

I thought I had included a general copyright notice for content (I usually do when setting up a site) but apparently neglected to do so here. I will work on getting that rectified. Author copyrights for individual pieces is probably a good idea as well.

My thought (at the moment) is that there is probably a better format for posting writing pieces than this forum software. I also have some thought to keeping the Madison-specific site separate from the writing site.

Keith,
Would the writing site have a link from the Madison site home page ??
I don't want you to create a lot of work/upkeep time for yourself. However, if you did this, would it allow access to the writing site without a login to the 627 site? If so perhaps a lot of the "salty" language would not be placed there. Would it be open to anyone or just association members?

By the way, I submitted 25 more poems for copyright application.
I will get a couple more on the website tomorrow.

Roy,
I sent you a separate email. Hopefully you've seen it by now. We are flexible/can negotiate what would be best.

I'm supportive of the idea of a separate site that doesn't require a login to this site. Certainly we could cross-link them.

With the limitations laid out in my email, I'm pretty much open to input as I think the "need" is there.
