This was an unfinished work...I started about a year ago...But reading RM's poem read at the reunion reminded me of this so I broke it out and finished it...It's for surface pukes and air dales mostly.
THE BIG BLACK METAL TOMB
I've got news for you shipmates, you ain't got a clue...
Of what it's like, to be black as night, in a big black metal tomb...
Ain't no windows on our submarines, got no screen door either dude...
We just feel our way like a bat they say, on sonar, that's the truth...
These are the bravest of the brave, or the biggest of all fools...
Who live inside these submarines...a big black metal tomb...
They depend upon their training, the drills, the constant threat...
They execute the battle plan with flawless bad intent...
For they understand the consequences of making a mistake...
How every life is in a link, that anyone of them could break...
It takes hours of preparation, it takes years and years of school...
To master the requirements of the big black metal tomb...
No ordinary seaman can fill these faithful shoes,
Can carry such a burden as the brothers of the Dolphins do...
Go try living in a dumpster, for three months at a time...
With no contact with friends or family, not a single telephone line...
It's above the call of duty, that's all that I can say...
These things they do...protecting you...In a big black metal grave...
So the next time you call me bubble head...Or tell folks we are all gay,
Just remember we are the first ones bud...Who are called into the fray...
And The Scorpion and the Thresher and all the boats of World War Two...
Are standing watch around the clock, In a big black metal tomb...
