Dale R. Atkinson, age 66 of Montello passed away Thursday afternoon, December 28, 2017 at UW Hospital in Madison. Dale was born in Portage to Wayne and Margaret “Peggy” (Schmitz) Atkinson on June 17, 1951. He graduated from Montello High School in 1969 and went on to serve his country in the United States Navy from 1970 until 1976; his last assignment was aboard the USS James Madison. Following his time in service, he began his career at Wisconsin Power and Light (now known as Alliant Energy) in Portage. Dale married his high school sweetheart, Mary Cotter on May 2, 1980 in Montello.
Dale retired from Alliant Energy on July 1, 2013 after 36 years of faithful employment. He was a hard worker, an avid golfer, and loved playing cards and spending time with his family at the cottage. Dale’s family feels greatly blessed to have had another year with him due to the generosity of organ donation as he was a recipient of a heart in December of 2016.
Dale is survived by his wife of 37 years, Mary and four children: Amy (George) Young of Sheboygan, John (Wendy) of Waukesha, Kara Atkinson of Milwaukee and Steven (Jodie) of Bloomfield, IA as well as three grandchildren: Maxwell, Abbie and Oliver. He is also survived by siblings: Mike of Florida, Mary (Dale “Bud”) Daggett of Montello and Cathy (Ervin Souzek) Atkinson of Wautoma. Dale is further survived by a dear family friend, Dennis (Julie) Collins as well as many extended family members.
A Time of Remembrance followed by military honors will take place at 3:00 PM on Friday, January 5, 2018 at the Crawford Funeral Home in Montello. The family will receive guests from 12:00 noon until the time of service. Private family inurnment will take place at the Montello City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations are preferred to the family for a memorial that will be established in Dale’s name to the American Heart Association.
