William Martin Lindler UNION, SC - Mr. William Martin Lindler, age 86, husband of Betty Vinson Stokes, of 121 Hillcrest Dr., Union, passed away Monday, January 30, 2017 at his home. Mr. Lindler was born in Whitmire, SC on January 23, 1931 a son of the late William Lindler and Lily Young Lindler. He retired from the United States Navy as a Chief Petty Officer after 21 years of service. Mr. Lindler had previously served with the Army Corps of Engineers and had worked in the Charleston Shipyard. He received four Good Conduct Medals, National Defense Service Medal and the Navy Artic Service Ribbon during his service. Mr. Lindler was first married to the late Georgia Inman Lindler. Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Billy Lindler and wife Barbara of Nanticoke, PA and Dan Lindler and wife Theresa of North Charleston; six daughters, Shirley Huneycutt and husband Jimmy of Whitmire, Jacqueline Darnell of Union, Marilyn Hamblin and husband Stuart of Union, Pamela Burnett and husband Robert of Goose Creek, Paula Turner and husband Gerald of Trenton, SC, and Beth Johnson and husband Chris of Alvin; one brother, James Lindler of Charleston; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by one sister, Peggy Knight and two brothers, Robert Lindler and Larry Joe Lindler. Memorial services will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, February 2, 2017 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Mr. Billy Lindler and Rev. Bryan Malone. Visitation will be held 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM Thursday prior to the services at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel. Memorials may be made to St. Mary's Submarine Museum, 102 W. Saint Mary's St., Saint Mary's, GA 31558 or US Submarine Veterans, C/O Charleston Base (USSVICB), 111 Pinewood Dr., Summerville, SC 29482.
