MMCS (SS) Donald Bonneau

Donald William Bonneau, age 68 of Hartington, Nebraska, died on Sunday, August 10, 2014 at his residence.

Memorial Services will be on Saturday August 16, 2014 at 10:30 am at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hartington with Rev. Amanda Jertson officiating. Visitation will begin at 9:30 am on Saturday at the church. Local military honors will be provided by the Hartington VFW Post 5283 and the Legion Riders. Burial will be at the Ft. McPherson National Cemetery in Maxwell, Nebraska at a later date. The Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington is handling the arrangements. Don was born on December 8, 1945 at Blair, Nebraska to Donald Willis and Everetta Jeanette (Harmer) Bonneau. As a young boy Don lived in Nebraska and California and when he was in the 8th grade moved from Crofton to Hartington. He graduated from Hartington Public High School in 1964. He married Karen Hansen on December 14, 1963 in Hartington. On May 27, 1964 he enlisted in the United States Navy and became a nuclear Power operator serving aboard four nuclear power submarines in the United States and overseas. He retired from the Navy on May 31, 1984 after serving 20 years. After retiring from the Navy he worked at a commercial nuclear power plant in Illinois as a licensed senior reactor operator for about 2 years and then went to the Hanford nuclear site in Washington State for 14 years as an instructor. In 1999 Don started working as a contractor at various nuclear power plants, government waste sites and chemical weapons depots traveling wherever the job took him and again able to see many parts of the country. After selling their house in Washington Don & Karen purchased a home in 2004 in Hartington. Don retired in 2009 and they moved to Hartington permanently, spending the winters in the Las Vegas, Nevada area for the past few years where his parents live. Don loved to hunt, fish, and travel but was unable to do this the last few years due to his failing health.

Don is survived by his wife Karen, his parents Don & Everetta Bonneau of Henderson, Nevada, mother-in-law Cleone Hansen of Hartington, three children and their spouses, Brian Bonneau & friend Dana of Seaside, Oregon, Cory & Donna Bonneau of Abilene, Kansas, Beverly & Jeff French of Kennewick, Washington; four grandchildren, Shandi & Chris Hayhurst of Junction City, Kansas, Ramie Bonneau & friend Hal Gue of Spokane, Washington, Zack & Janelle Bonneau of Everett, Washington, Will Bonneau of Kennewick, Washington; one great granddaughter Liliann Hayhurst; two brothers & their spouses, Ron & Shirley Bonneau of Calimesa, California, Philip & LeOra Bonneau of Harbor City, California; in-laws Bob & Nancy Hansen of Coleridge, Bruce Wingender of Omaha, and Kristi Hochstein of Hartington.

He was preceded in death by an infant brother, Vaughn Bonneau, his grandparents Everett & Rachel Harmer, Gerald & Rose Bonneau, son-in-law, Russ Orr, and father-in-law Elmer Hansen.
