Post by Board Admin »

CARMODY Don N. Carmody, age 70, a 35-year resident of Slidell, LA, passed away on Wednesday, March 21, 2012, at Trinity Neurological Center. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 45 years, Carol Herington Carmody. He was the adored father of Kitty Carmody Hagan and Eileen Carmody-Wicks, and the cherished "Papa" of Bree Hagan, Ashton Wicks and Hannah Wicks, all of Slidell. He is also survived by his dearest friends: Edward and Alfa Maschek. He was the only child of the late Dr. Donald R. Carmody and Violette Nyland Carmody. Born on November 25, 1941 in East Chicago, IN, Don was raised in Iowa, Texas and Illinois. After graduating from high school in Crete, IL in 1960, he joined the U.S. Navy as an electronics technician and nuclear reactor operator. During his Navy years, he served aboard several submarines, including the USS Sargo and USS James Madison. He was involved in the construction of the Madison and served on her first Blue Crew. He later taught electronics in "A" and "B" school for the Navy and served a tour at NAS Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, before leaving the Navy as a Chief Petty Officer. After serving in the Navy, he worked briefly for Motorola in Illinois before transferring to Texas to accept a job as a radio communications specialist with U.S. Customs, eventually retiring in 2002. Don was deeply spiritual and actively involved with St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church for 35 years. He served the church community in a variety of capacities, as a parish council member, usher, and as an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist. Together with his wife, he received the honor of the Order of St. Louis IX Medallion in recognition of their dedication to the work of the Catholic Church in the Archdiocese of New Orleans. Don will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by all who knew him. His kindness defined him and his generosity to family, friends and even complete strangers knew no limits. He lived his life by the credo that time and attention were the greatest gifts one could bestow, and he gave generously of all he had, preferring to lead by example without expectation of recognition or reward. Friends and family are invited to participate in a celebration of Don's life. Visitation will be at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, 1050 Robert Blvd., on Saturday, March 31, 2012, from 9:00 am to 11:00 am, with the Funeral Mass to follow at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery, 1751 Gause Blvd. West, where Don will be laid to rest beside his wife in the mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, his family asks that Masses be said, donations made to the St. Margaret Mary Building Fund, Second Harvest of New Orleans, or the charity of your choice . Arrangements by Honaker Funeral Home, Inc., Slidell, LA
