James (Blackie) Blackwelder

Post by JT-STS627g »

It saddens me to report that I have received word of the passing of James Blackwelder, Blackie, as he was known aboard the boat. He passed away yesterday in Palm Harbor, FL after suffering several strokes complicated with heart problems.
Blackie was part of the Gold crew sonar gang during the '70-'74 era. Served aboard during Poseidon conversion, post conversion sound calibrations and shake-down cruise. He completed the first couple of patrols after conversion out of Holy Lock. He was a great shipmate and a good personal friend and will be missed dearly.
Services will be Oct. 1, 11:00-12:30 at Vinson Funeral Home, Tarpon Springs, FL. The funeral will follow at Florida National Cemetary. Sail-On Submariner.
