Captain Joseph (Joe) Laurence Skoog, USN (Ret), died on February 27th, 2013. He was born in Seattle on July 27th, 1922.

After studying engineering at the University of Washington for two years, he was appointed to the Naval Academy. Following graduation, he served aboard the USS NEW JERSEY in both the South Pacific and occupied Japan. He married Helen (Nonie) Kuebler upon the ship's return to the states and was transferred to Submarine School.

Subsequently, he served on four submarines, attended Naval Postgraduate School, the Oak Ridge School of Reactor Technology, commanded the submarine ENTEMEDOR, and was then selected to the nuclear power program.

In 1960, he assumed command of the nuclear submarine SKATE, and led her sister ship SEADRAGON and a Coast Guard icebreaker in the first multiship polar operation under the polar ice. He was awarded the Legion of Merit for his performance on this cruise.

In 1962, he began the process of leading two crews through pre-commissioning of the nuclear deterrent missile submarine JAMES MADISON. Upon commissioning of that ship, he assumed command of the Blue crew.

Captain Skoog's final duty was as Assistant Chief of Staff for Polaris on the staff of Commander, Submarines, Pacific Fleet.

Joe is survived by Nonie, his wife of 66 years, daughter Sherri (Hugh) Tower, son Todd (Sandy Buxton) Skoog, son Mark (Karla) Skoog, brother Donald Skoog, nine grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Tibbetts Creek Manor in Issaquah on Saturday, March 23rd, at 2:30 PM.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Franciscan Hospice, PO Box 1502, Tacoma, WA 98401.
