ImageCaptain Le Roy B. Hebbard Jr. STATESVILLE Captain Le Roy B. Hebbard Jr., USN (Retired) passed away Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012, at Gordon Hospice House, Statesville, after losing his battle with cancer. Captain Hebbard enlisted in the U.S. Navy Oct. 14, 1948. By congressional appointment, he attended the U.S. Naval Academy with the class of 1953. He was accepted to the 100th class at Naval Submarine School, New London, Conn. After serving on the USS Sea Leopard, staff of Submarine Squadron Six, he then attended Naval Post Graduate School, Monterey, Calif. He subsequently served as NAV/OPS on the USS Sailfish and Executive Officer on the USS Albacore, Portsmouth, N.H. Captain Hebbard was then ordered to the Navy Nuclear Power Program. In 1965 he served as Executive Officer on the USS James Madison; 1967 Commanding Officer on the USS Henry Clay; 1968 Commanding Officer on the USS Robert E Lee. In 1970, he was transferred to Washington, D.C. as the start up officer for the Submarine Maintenance, Monitoring and Support Office. In 1974, Captain Hebbard was ordered to Charleston, S.C. to take command of the USS Hunley and retired in 1976 after 28 years in the U.S. Navy. Afterwards he worked in the United States nuclear industry before completely retiring in 1991. He lived in Florida until 2004, when he moved to Union Grove, where he resided until his death. Captain Hebbard was preceded in passing by his first wife of 49 years, Beverly. He is survived by their five children and families, Robert and wife, Selah, Jonathan and wife, Kelly, and daughter, Zoe, Thomas, Julie Byrd and husband, Robby and daughter, Avery and Le Roy III and wife, Anne Marie and sons Joshua and Zachary; sister, Louise Lawrence; second wife, Rosemary Eury Hebbard, her daughter, Kellene Wells Bock, granddaughter, Emily Bock and grandson, Aaron Bock. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013 at Union Grove United Methodist Church, Union Grove, with the Rev. Stephen H. Kirby officiating. Light refreshments will be provided in the fellowship hall following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to Gordon Hospice House, 2341 Simonton Rd., Statesville, NC 28625. Reavis Funeral Home of Statesville, is serving the family.
