Charles Edward "Chuck" Holtzman, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and son, lost his fight with pancreatic cancer on Wednesday, January 18, 2012, at Capital Hospice in Arlington, Virginia. Charles was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on September 7, 1943 and was the only child of Morris and Rhea Holtzman. He was raised in Miami Beach, Florida where he met his wife, Ruth Lynn Warhaftig. A 1961 graduate of Beach High, he joined the United States Navy, at 17, became a submarine sailor, serving extensively on diesel, fast attack & fleet ballistic missile submarines. He raised two daughters, Wendy and Michele.
Retiring from active duty after 22 years of service as a Chief Petty Officer, Chuck joined General Electric Power Generation Systems and moved from Charleston, SC to Montclair, VA. In 1984, he continued to serve the Navy as a government civilian at Naval Sea Systems Command in Crystal City. Chuck provided submarine In-Service Engineering support for Performance Monitoring Team operations, pierside facility management, Combat/Sonar System engineering and Advanced Seal Delivery System vehicle electric power storage systems. He retired from NAVSEA in 2004, and was the scheduler for the Qwest Communications Technical Support services section in Chantilly, VA for several years.
Chuck is survived by his wife of 43 years, Ruth; two daughters and their husbands, Wendy and David Golden, and Michele and Jeffrey Stark; and their four grandchildren, Benjamin, Samuel, and Vivian Golden, and Michael Stark.
Chuck was laid to rest in a private family ceremony in Mt. Nebo Cemetery, Miami, FL. Chuck was passionately committed to his family first, his Jewish identity, and a lifetime of service to country. The world lost a great man. He will be missed.
