John Irons passed away early Thursday morning Thursday, 27 August. John was a nuke EM1(SS) with the Blue Crew of 1966 - 67 (from USSVI / Decklog database). I checked the Madison website member list and found his name listed genericly as "User Name 10383". John has been serving as our treasurer at the USSVI Requin Base of the Pittsburgh area. John W. Irons Jr., 66, of Plum Borough, passed away peacefully Thursday, Aug. 27, 2009, in Forbes Hospice, Oakland. He was born Sept. 4, 1942, in Johnstown, beloved son of Annajean (Zimmerman) Irons, of Johnstown, and the late John W. Irons Sr. Prior to retirement, John was employed by the Westinghouse Nuclear Energy Center, Monroeville, as a project manager for the building of nuclear power plants. He was a veteran of the Navy and a member and treasurer of the Submariners Unit, U.S.S. Requin, Pittsburgh. He was a member of Holiday Park United Methodist Church. John was a very proud graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, having earned a degree in mechanical engineering. He was a longtime dedicated fan of the Pitt Panthers basketball and football teams and attended many of their games. He and his wife loved traveling, spending time at the ocean, and enjoyed taking cruises. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his dear grandson, Michael E. Caldwell. John will be greatly missed and is survived by his loving family; his devoted wife of 28 years, Marion A. (Harvey) Irons; children, John Michael Irons and his wife, Sylvia, of Florida, John W. Irons III and his wife, Wendy, of North Carolina, and Denise Smail and her husband, David, of Mt. Pleasant; brother, Ronald Irons and his wife, Marsha, of Ohio; sister, Denise Collins and her husband, Jeffrey, of Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was the proud grandfather of four special grandchildren, Ashley, Phylicia, Shane and Abby. Family and friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday and from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the VAIA FUNERAL HOME, INC., 463 Athena Drive, Delmont, 724-468-1177. Funeral services for John will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in the funeral home with Pastor Joel S. Garrett of Holiday Park United Methodist Church, officiating. Entombment with full military honors accorded by the Veterans Honor Group will follow in the Twin Valley Memorial Park Mausoleum, Delmont. The Irons family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the staff and caregivers of Forbes Hospice for the excellent care John received.
