Durn Yankees!

There are as many different recipes for hushpuppies as there are cooks. My mother used hush puppy mix (I think the brand was Martha White, Zatarain and McCormick also make one). In my family, Stouffer's and Swanson qualified as "old family recipes".

You can find recipes on the web. Substituting flat beer for some of the liquid was always pretty good. I usually like a little diced onion in them, too.

Good luck!

Did you ever find one? We were at my sister's house this week ad I looked though Mom's old recipe notebook.
Mississippi Hush puppies
1 cup self-rising cornmeal mix
1/2 cup self-rising flour
1 tablespoon sugar
1 large egg, lightly beaten
1/2 cup milk or beer
1/2 cup diced onion
1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper
1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and chopped
Vegetable oil
Combine first 3 ingredients in a large bowl. Make a well in the center of the mixture.
Combine egg and next 4 ingredients, stirring well; add to dry ingredients, stirring just until moistened.
Pour oil to a depth of 3 inches into a Dutch oven or heavy saucepan and heat to 375*
Drop batter by rounded tablespoonfuls into oil and fry in batches 2 minutes on each side or until golden.
Drain on paper towels, serve immediately. Yield 1 1/2 dozen.
Dixie Lily Hush puppies
2 cups Dixie Lily (brand name) Corn Meal
1 tablespoon Dixie Lily Hard Wheat flour
1 teaspoon soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 tablespoon salt
1 whole egg
6 tablespoon chopped onion
2 cups buttermilk
Mix all dry ingredients, add chopped onion, then mil and egg. Drop by spoonfuls into deep hot grease where fish are cooking. When done, they will float. Put on brown paper to drain. I think this is the one my mother used.
There are also 62 different recipes for hushpuppies at Cooks.com

Good luck!
