At sea, I was on the Blue Crew and primarily stood AMR #1 with Bob Wright and Bill Hemmelgarn (but there were a few other A-Gangers that were qualified and stood the watch at the same time). Very interesting and good site--I'm glad to have come across it...and to see/read/email friends I knew is GREAT. Since I first visited a couple days ago I've been trying to place some faces to names to help fill gaps in the lists of the early '80's but so many already have visited here--I don't want to make redundant entires. Somewhere in my attic (I dread the visit) I might find an old qual PO list or qual card--I know I should have a few--it seems I was always losing them in the yard and needing a new one...or maybe the an old "library" list. Anyway, thanks to those that have set up this site and it's nice to welcomed aboard again.
Ok: WELCOME ABOARD!! Again. And don't worry about revisiting, we're all getting old and either don't remember the facts or will forget that you revisited them. We just like to see people talking! So....you're gonna be at the reunion in CT next year, yes?

Yet another yardbird I don't remember. Jeez I'm gettin' senile.....Be glad you still have the memories, mine seem to be fading fast!

Anyway, welcome back!

Would that be "The Bezerkers" when we were in Newport News, early 80's?

I reported to the 627(B) in January 1968. The CO was CDR RB Miller and the XO was LCDR JD Apple. E Div officer was Lt(JG??) Dothard.
I Belive my first patrol was April-June of '68. From what I can gather from this website, this was patrol #15 for the 627 ??

On the "off crew" the wardroom asked for volunteers for scuba school because we had apparently lost the only ship's diver. (Hindsite being 20-20, I should have questioned why we lost him). Anyway, I reported to New London Ct. with 23 other guys who also did not know what punishment they were volunteering for. Out of 24 "volunteers, only 12 graduated. For the last two weeks the instructors started referring to us as "the Dirty Dozen. Their purpose in life seemed to be to force all of us to quit. But the harrassment was good, because for one patrol cycle, I had to do hull inspections at one end of a rope with Lt. Dothard at the other end - Topside, of course.

On my second patrol I qualified (SS) and made 2nd Class. And for the first time of my Naval Career, I felt like no one resented my breathing the ship's air while on patrol.

But I digress and am crying on my keyboard. In January of 1968, I wound up on the overhaul crew. Volunteers (there I go again) fom both crews tok the 27 to Electric Boat in Groton, Conn. For Overhaul and the first SSBN to be converted to the POSEIDON missle. They bored out our missle tubes and put in a LARGER missle. I wondered many nights over this puzzle. Then Jim Scholen EM2(SS) told me that car engines sometimes failed when they enlarged the boar of the engin blocks. Thanks a lot, Jim, for shareing that tidbit of knowledge.

Well to conclude this history book, We completed overhaul around June of 1970. I was assigned to the GOLD crew. Our CO was CDR Diley and I think our XO was CDR Jaudon.

From about July 1970 to February 1971 We did shakedowns, missle tests, and at some point a trip to San Juan, St. Thomas, and St. Johns islands for sound tests maybe?? I can't remember many details of this time, except that the diving was great there, and I retrieved a wallet for someone who lost it comming across the brow returning from liberty. If you are out there, now would be a good time to thank me. I forgot who you are.

June - August 1971 was my last patrol. Probably #19 for the 627. I was seperated from service on August 23, 1971

More later.

Welcome aboard Roy!
I reported to the Gold crew in April of 1970 at EB in Groton. Went through the last part of Poseidon conversion and refueling. You brought back a lot of good memories. Yes, we were in San Juan for sound trials. I was part of the sonar gang. I think it was called TOTO, Tongue of the Ocean.
I seem to recall the Riviera Club in San Juan, the one with the revolving calypso band in the center of the dance floor, what a place that was. Got my face slapped by one of the "ladies" in the evening gowns as I remember. Enough said about that!
Nice to hear from another member of the old crew. Welcome!

Hi Russ, Thanks for the welcome.

A couple things kept me busy for the past couple of weeks and I apologize for the delay in response.

Yes, I'm planning on going to the reunion and am willing to help with arrangements as my schedule permits if it will help. This week I was actually worked in Groton for two days and had a chance to visit the Nautilus Museum (again), and (briefly) the SubVets on School Street; and on the way home left a small donation at the Mohegan Sun (one of two local casinos).

It would be great to see some old shipmates and meet other members of a 30+ year crew.

No biggie, I've been rather busy myself.

Excellent!! A local! I'm planning on taking a week off to attend, but also because both parents, 2 sisters, and others live in CT. I'm trying to plan on a little extra time to be a tourist instead of driving/visiting the whole time.

I feel your pain! I've always wanted to go to a casino, throw 2 handfuls of nickels in the air and scream, "THERE!! YOU WIN!!!" and walk out. I sure could save some money that way.....

Hi all, I was a RO on the blue crew of the mad dog 1970-72, made the test shot of the poseidon with a few russian trawlers around in the area off cape kennedy. Also when the sea trial had a hi pressure air line go off inside the boat and had us all saying our prayers, thankful we were still on the surface. Other than that had some good times, especially in charleston.

Been lurking around here for awhile. Gold Crew sonarman form 83-85. I'll try to drop in more often and be more active.

O.K, I'll play the rules and see if anyone remembers me. Dennis Knapp, MM2/SS, Nuc, Blue Crew, 77 - 79, five patrols. As the saying goes, "It was the worst of times, it was the best of times". That's exactly how I remember it. Made some of the greatest friends I'll ever have (and still keep in touch with one, Chris Edgemon) but also learned what the word 'hate' actually felt like concerning at least one LPO (a prick who lived just to make some guys lives miserable for his entertainment, a true sadist whose name will go unmentioned. The irony is I heard he left the Nav and got some dream job working for Disney World in Orlando as a maintenance guy. Go figure!)

Anyway, I've gotten way off track here. Would love to hear from any of you salts who still have some coherent brain cells left after 30 years. Madison, Porter, I see you guys are hanging around this board. Anybody else? Does anybody remember that red-headed Ensign, Lt. Gehring? I think that was his name. He was so clueless and condenscending at the same time that the XO gave us the go ahead to teach him some respect the old rag hat way. Man, he had it coming too. Who was the big ET that popped up from LL Engineroom into Manuvering stark naked one midnight shift? Ahh the memories of hours upon hours of sheer boredom sandwiched in between moments of sheer panic. Reality was much stranger than fiction doing slow circles above the artic circle.
