I had one of those Chevy 4 door impalas. I had a friend stationed in
Kings Bay who got me a sticker for my car to keep it down there. As
soon as we had a long weekend someone would happen to be going up to
Chasn and I would pick up my car and leave it there over patrol.
After 10 speeding tickets you got to know were the cops were sitting
and knew their names. Lucky for me with Wisconsin plates no points
were ever taken, and insurance stayed the same. We could make
Jacksonville in under 30 min and Chasn in just a little over in 2 1/2
hours. We use to put on the miles and we never had to wait for that
liberty van. Thanks to RM Watson for that sticker.

Pich,
I guess there is no statute of limitation for being reckless. For your
info, Mapquest estimates the trip to take 3 hours and 35 minutes for
the 207 miles to cover.
I remember racing against a motorcyle at night on highway 17 at the
wheel of a BMW but I don't think I beat your time.
I guess I must have the slowest transit time from King's Bay to
Charleston : About an hour before the announcement of "Blue relieve
Gold" I had to step into maneuvering and relieve Rex, the EDO so he
could pick up an award (!) on the tender. The tag-outs were in such a
disarray that the Bluie EDO refused to take over from me after the 1MC
announcement... Took a while to get that mess straightened out and by
the time I crossed the brow, the buses had left the pier without me
(but with my sea bag and stuff). Felt like calling mom, but called the
Roadway Inn instead where some crew members were meeting their wives.
Going down the list of guests, I recognized the Captain's name ! He
picked me up at the pier and drove me to near Waycross, GA where we
saw one of our buses on the side of the highway with a blown tire. I
chose to be stranded with other shipmates on the side of the road than
to continue imposing on the Captain and his wife.
I suppose it took me about 6 hours to get back to Charleston. Which
reminds me of the time we pulled into Charleston Naval Base with the
buses and saw a couple of police cars lined up waiting to arrest a
crew member, imagine getting off a patrol and getting hauled to jail,
but that's another story.
Y'all have a great 4th of July !

I have personnaly made the speed run in 2 hrs, 45 minutes. One of the guys who
worked for me said he did it in 2hrs, 20 minutes but the guy was a real lunitic.
I made the trip with him was and feared for my life the whole way but it still
took over 2 and 1/2 hrs that time.
