The Ritual of the Worry Stone
Does anyone remember the ritual of the “Worry Stone” ? It may have only been a Blue crew thing in the mid-sixties. I know these things come and go and some live longer than others. I was curious of its origin and would like someone to reply if they know that the Gold crew or other boats practiced it...

The Heartache Stone
I wrote this poem in the first person, but it is based on sympathetic observations. No one is immune to temptations; It is particularly a problem for a sailor on the beach. I know. I believe it was Ben Franklin that said something like this," Experience keeps a dear school, but a fool learns in...

Words of the Heart
The poem I am posting today needs an introduction. The intro is a love story, so some of you may want to stop right here. If you are comfortable with someone sharing their feelings with you then read on. But a warning is in order for those who served on the Madison with me: I just re-read it and it’...

Night Walk
It has been a while since I got on the Reunion Website. I was surprised and pleased to see the interest in the Patrol Poetry section of the Discussion Forums. The poem I am posting today was written when I was in sub school – Groton, Conn – I was unmarried but very serious about my wife, Jenny. Some...

Re: Patrol dates of Madison's #15 (Blue #8)
Jim, The best I can come up with on the dates you wanted are from my QUAL card. I am pretty sure that I would have had to be on board to get these particular quals signed off. The dates should be fairly close to the beginning/end of the patrol cycle. April 1st - Sanitary Tanks - PO signature (?? Mil...

You got up early today. 627's 15th patrol was my first. I am pretty sure it was April to July. I can probably get dates. We flew Charleston to Holy Loc for the COC. I will get back to you if I have dates.

To Time
75 days isolated underwater was tough. The family-grams we received were a real blessing and made the long months and days at sea a little easier. But family was not the only thing we missed while on patrol. This poem was not written to family or my girlfriend, but about other loves. To Time O, Time...

Now
Remember that last night at home before going aboard the Madison to set the manuvering watch - or boarding that flight to Scotland for the change of command? I know you do. Perhaps this poem will stir up some bittersweet memories of those last few hours before you had to say "good-by". The...

Eternity and Unforgotten
I wrote these two poems for an electrician friend that was in boot camp, class "A" school, and basic "nuc" school with me. He shall remain nameless. He was having trouble with his girlfriend and begged me to write a poem for him. The first, "Eternity", was written in Ma...

Night Flight (On a DC-6)
This poem was written as I was leaving home (from leave from Sub School) on a night flight (about midnight) to Charleston, SC. I had orders to report to SSBN627B on 6 Nov 1967. I left as late as I could to get to the base on time. There was no moon. It was a short hop (Birmingham to Atlanta), and on...

Re: Holy Moley! (comment)
Keith, Would the writing site have a link from the Madison site home page ?? I don't want you to create a lot of work/upkeep time for yourself. However, if you did this, would it allow access to the writing site without a login to the 627 site? If so perhaps a lot of the "salty" language w...

Re: Holy Moley! (comment)
Keith, Do you have a program that tracks (by day) each topic "read" activity? It appears that we are getting a fair number of daily looks at the poetry topic. If you don't, I think to satisfy my curiosity, I will start recording the activity manually (each day that I visit the forum) and c...

lf not two much trouble. I say yes. I will check it to see if I can locate some old friends from the training schools (2 years worth) who wrote poetry. I will also tell them about our web site if this is O K .

Time Regulation
One of my watch stations was the EPCP. I had to twist the knobs that controlled the regulators that controlled the speed (frequency) and voltage of the ship's SSTGs that normally supplied electricity for the entire ship. 95% of the time it was pretty boring, so I thought a lot about what I would do ...
