Welcome aboard Roy! I reported to the Gold crew in April of 1970 at EB in Groton. Went through the last part of Poseidon conversion and refueling. You brought back a lot of good memories. Yes, we were in San Juan for sound trials. I was part of the sonar gang. I think it was called TOTO, Tongue of t...

I seem to remember an incident that happen shortly before or right after I reported aboard in 1970 at EB in Groton. The Madison was either going out or coming in from sea trials in the yards(Poseidon conversion) and didn't want to wait on the drawbridge on the river to raise fully so, they opened th...

How about this: Sea trials after Poseidon conversion out of EB in Groton, Conn. I remember surfacing in the middle of a Russian fishing fleet off the Grand Bank! Test of missile launch system with 4 sabot ripple shot, very impressive! Poseidon missile launch at Cape Kennedy(Canaveral) Shakedown crui...

Leroy, I was in sonar gang during your time. Have a slight memory of you. Maybe a photo would revive the brain cells. Us sonarmen were in our own little world anyway! Capt. Akers is the one that handed me my dolphins. One of the biggest moments of my life! I recall the time we were tied up at Rosie ...

Name That Crew

Can you ID these shipmates? If you can, than you must be an "Old Fart" too! (hint; they're all from the 70-74 crew)

Russ,
I had to see if the avatar thing still works. So I uploaded a current
photo to photobucket and pasted the url into my profile. I now have
a current photo for my avatar.
Don't know what you did wrong, but it works for me!

Just in case some were wondering how to get a photo as an avatar. All you have to do is upload your digital photos to a picture hosting website and enter the info on your personal profile. There is a free hosting website that makes it really easy to post pictures in online forums. www.photobucket.co...

The other guy in the picture is Jimmy(Blackie) Blackwelder. Blackie was standing topside watch. We had just got back from spending the night in the Dunoon jail for being drunk and "out and about in the night" cause we missed the last boat back to the tender after we closed all the pubs in ...

Joe, You would have really enjoyed the first reunion in Charleston. It was really great. The whole sonar gang was there. The only one missing was Jimmy Blackwelder(Blackie). John Nesbitt was there too. He hasn't changed at all. Remember his little Porsche 914? I wonder if Starbuck still has his mous...

Joe, I remember you. I thought the name sounded familiar, but the picture avatar nailed it! This is great! Like a step back in time and establishing contact with old shipmates. Almost like being back on the boat on patrol. The picture makes the forum come alive. You're not just reading an empty mess...
