Re: Myron Wilbur “John” Law

John Law was our cook on the gold crew in the early '70s. I can still hear his high pitched scratchy southern accent! My fondest memory of John was standing at the head of the chow line during our Christmas meal, carving the big prime rib and asking "rare, medium or well done?" Great cook ...

Re: Lawrence (Larry) Martin

Thanks for the information Terry. Sounds like a fitting tribute. I know it has to be especially sad for you. I think you spent a lot of time with Marty during the off-crews. I've been thinking a lot about Marty lately, and could probably write a book about time on watch in the sonar shack. Marty wil...

Re: Lawrence (Larry) Martin

Very sad news. "Marty" was my sonar supervisor through Poseidon conversion, combined-crew and 6 patrols out of Holy Loch. He always reminded me of my "older brother". The 4 years I was on the Madison, Marty was always there. I am so glad I got to see him again at the 2004 reunion...

Re: ETCS (SS) William Smith III - Deceased

I remember one of our Nav-ET's on the Gold crew 70-74 was William Smith. Think he was a 1class.

Re: Command Master Chief John E. "Jack" Ilgenfritz USN (Ret.)

I remember Jack well as an RM1 on the Gold crew. He was well liked, a great shipmate and fellow submariner. My fondest memory of Jack, is him in his blue "poopy suit" with scruffy attempt of a beard standing in the doorway of the radio shack shooting the breeze with my sonar supervisor, us...

Re: LEAVING

Just beautiful Roy. I think you captured the feeling perfectly. It was always somewhat of a lonely feeling. I think we Submariners share a different perspective of the Cold War than that of the younger generations that believe it was a big farce or hoax. It was a job. We took our job seriously with ...

Re: Missing Madison Personnel

There was a Richard A "Rat" Taylor on our crew. He was an A-ganger as I recall. Can't remember if he had made 3rd class yet. Remember when he drank his Dolphins in Holy Loch. They carried him back, puked and fell asleep in the shower. lol

Re: George a.McDermott blue crew 1966 to 1971 where are you? From dave bonney h

The last time I saw George was, I think, 1970. He had a big belt buckle with "Short Timer" engraved in bold red letters! I think that had to be during combined-crew. Biggest belt buckle I ever saw! lol

Re: One Year

Beautiful Roy. That was the month and year I reported on board. Being single, I lived on that barge. Fresh out of Sub School and finally on a "real" submarine. Brings back many memories. I recall that the coffee in the galley got awfully strong in the evening. Spent many a night sitting to...

Re: Battery Well Song

I remember standing below decks watches and checking damper D-5 and that funny little battery well airflow indicator. Spent a lot of time in that library. There were a lot of interesting books. Good memories!

Re: Patrol Pin Stars

Kelly Joe, That's what I was wondering. I just saw a website that sells submarine insignia and their explanation is: the bare patrol means 1 patrol with a gold star for each additional patrol to a maximum of 4 gold stars; a silver star represents 5 patrols and takes precedence over gold stars and al...

Re: Chief Petty Officer Benjamin F. “Benny” McDonald, Jr.

Ah yes, I remember McDonald quite well. He was an excellent southern cook. Because of him, I developed a love for fried breaded oakra, which continues to this day, also hot buttered-grits for breakfast. One of my fondest memories of him is the partrol when we would vote for the "midnight movie&...
