William Subalusky
Happened to be on the Naval Submarine League website today after coming across an old copy of The Submarine Review in one of my many boxes of memorabilia and noted that W. T. Subalusky was one of their contributors. Came to this website to verify my memory was correct as I thought our engineer durin...

Re: Missing Madison Personnel
A couple others MT1 Melvin Benton is not listed. Mel was onboard Madison as an MT2 when I reported in '77. He went through ERO in Newport News. Last time I saw Mel he was an MTC at SWFLANT in the mid-90s. Don't recall if he retired from SWFLANT Kings Bay or went back to sea. MT2 Joseph Dowell. Joe w...

Missing Madison Personnel
I noticed that MT2 Calvin A. Jones is on the list but his status is missing. Calvin "Butch" Jones was living in Chancellorsville, VA when I last saw him in the early to mid 2000s. Butch was selected for ECP and finished his degree at the University of South Carolina if I remember right. He...

Not sure how to upload photos in the Photos section, so thought I'd send as an attachment to see how that works. This is a photo of Captain Robert Rish and myself (FTBC(SS) Jeff Mathes) at a Madison awards ceremony, early 1990. My recollection is this was my end of tour award before transferring to ...

627 Blue Circa 1986
Here are some names of Blue Crew personnel from a Qual PO memo I sent to the XO in January '86. I have bounced these names against the crew list on this web page and these all appear to be new additions. Sorry, but mostly last names. Hopefully some of you will recall some first names. YNC Sugg YN2 H...

Re: Identifying Shipmates
Going through the crew list and noticed one of my weapons officers, LT Terry Michael (Mike) Shaltz was not listed. He was Madison Blue Weps when I reported in '85 for my second tour. Mike was my boss later on at CSG-6 staff then transferred to OIC of Charleston Torpedo Facility. Retired as a LCDR. H...

Blue Nose Initiation
It has been a few years since this event occurred on Madison Blue for me (78 ?), but there are still some aspects of it that I do recall. The initiation was delayed due to the Blue Noses that were sent to the crew's lounge to send up the wogs were overpowered, duct taped, gagged, and stuffed into PO...

Re: Enough, guys! Who's here?
Hello Gents. I'm what we would have called a "lifer" during my first enlistment. Ended up spending nearly 34 years in uniform, 15 enlisted, 19 commissioned. Sea tours included three different tours on Madison, both Blue and Gold crews and a tour on John Adams. Two tender tours on the Holla...

Re: Reflecting on folks I've met along the way
Leo Skeivick (no doubt incorrectly spelled) and I were in the same boot camp company. We both went to Dam Neck for A and C school. Leo went Nav ET and I was an FTB. We were assigned to Madison and did our initial sea tour which included the ERO at Newport News then DASO together. Lost track of Leo a...

Re: Time on the Pond on MADISON
Ended up serving three different tours on Madison. Made four patrols before ERO in Newport News, then DASO. Back to the Madison in '85 for three more patrols. Short cycled to the Adams out of Holy Loch after making Chief for three runs before returning to Madison after Adams Strat Offload for three ...

Re: Battery Well Song
I still remember the incident well after all these years, and was one of those who listened to you sing this song in the ship's lounge and maybe on halfway night as well. CDR Clarke (XO) took charge at the scene and ordered the plastisoled CO2 extinguisher placed through the battery hatch and set to...
